Case study: Sandra

Sandra is an early years practitioner working in a preschool setting with children aged two to five. New children to the setting are allocated a special ‘key person’ practitioner who is the first point of contact for the family. Each key person in the setting is responsible for five children. Key person responsibilities include: settling the child and family into the setting, ensuring regular observations and assessments are carried out for each child, keeping records for each child up to date, liaising with parents and carers, and developing and maintaining strong relationships with their key children.

Over the last three years the practitioners have met to discuss the success of the key person approach and how it might be improved. Sandra raised an important point at a recent team meeting which has now instigated a change in the way that the key person is allocated.

Sandra had noticed that children sometimes seem to ‘bond’ more naturally with practitioners who have not been allocated as their key person. She suggested that the setting use the settling in period to observe children before the key person is allocated. The allocation could then be informed by the child’s choice of which practitioner they feel most comfortable with and naturally migrate towards. The preschool is now trialling this approach.

Thinking about a setting you either work in or have contact with, how are supportive relationships between children and practitioners promoted in this setting? How appropriate is a ‘key person’ approach?
